MI: You’ve got some exciting news to share with us. Why don’t we start with who you are and where you’re from?
BD: I live in Lovington New Mexico. My full name is Bartholomew Day and I’m the owner of 42 Days Co. We’re a vertically integrated plant manufacturing company. We hired the Plan Writers to help with our manufacturing application and were issued the fourth license in the state of New Mexico for cultivation. We just bought 21 acres, so now we’re moving into the manufacturing unit, expanding the growth to almost 30,000 sq ft, and growing a bunch of outdoor plants. Our plan is to open a dispensary right behind the facility with the plan to expand to five additional dispensaries in the future.
MI: How long have you been working in this industry?
BD: This is my 27th year of growing. I started when I was 13 years old. Me and some friends put some seed into a creek bed when we were young and I’ve been doing it ever since. It’s my passion and it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. It wasn’t legal anywhere at that point. It was ugly. As soon as we got buds, we thought we were done. We didn’t know anything about males or females [hemp plant]. We tried smoking it and didn’t know what we needed to do...it was just a complete disaster. Then we got a hold of the Anarchist Cookbook at the public library and that’s how we got started. You’ve got to remember this is before the internet. Eventually, I ended up in California, just above the Emerald Triangle.
MI: What is the thing you like most about it?
BD: I actually like the community. I’ve met many good people. And most of my family and good friends are just part of the community. Now we’ve gone from a community of drug dealers, lawbreakers, and bikers, to a community where the world is so interested in what we do. It’s cool to see everyone show interest in what we do now. I’m lucky to have been part of that from the beginning. I think the technical term is “Legacy growers” but I prefer the term “OG growers”. It makes me sound hard.
MI: Is there an exciting moment that really stands out for you?
BD: I think that my biggest stand-out moment was when my grandfather and his best friend sentenced me to prison. My grandfather was a judge and I thought I was a really hard thing. Unfortunately, my grandpa passed about four months before I was issued my recreational license in New Mexico. Before he passed, he told me I was his best friend in the world, and he couldn’t be prouder of what I’ve accomplished in the industry.
MI: That’s incredible. How has that influenced your mission in the industry?
BD: First of all, I’ve learned how to have fun. I think the industry is getting too serious right now. And also, I’ve learned that it’s so important to take care of the people that helped me get to where I am now. We take what we can retire comfortably with, without all the extra fluff, but it’s all about giving back to the community and the people
MI: What advice would you give first-time business owners entering the industry?
BD: The biggest is to build a solid team. Don’t try to do it on your own. It is too hard of an industry and there is too much regulation and lack of regulation at the exact same time. You’re also going to need a lot of money. You can bootstrap as much as you can, but build yourself a solid foundation. Invest in your team. If you’re missing one piece of the puzzle, you’re gonna fail.
MI: Do you have a favorite strain?
BD: My favorite strain is the first strain I ever created. It’s called 42 Nights. It took me seven years because we were just in the backroads of California. We didn’t have the technology. I went through 13 strains to get there. It’s about 90% Indica.
MI: Is there anything you read in your spare time?
BD: I devour books. I read on average about 60-70 books a year. Oddly enough, the only hemp books I’ve read are Ed Rosenthal and the Anarchist Cookbook. It’s mostly non-fiction and science-fiction. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I also love Huckleberry Finn.
